Navacelles circus
The Navacelles circus
The cirque de Navacelles attracts 300,000 visitors every year, making it one of the most visited sites in the Hérault department. The canyon, carved out by the Vis river, is a spectacular sight. The steep-sided gorges cut through the limestone plateaus of Blandas (Gard) and Larzac (Hérault) over a height of 300m. Geologists estimate that it took the Vis 2 to 3 million years to cut its way through the limestone. Below, the river cascades past the village of Navacelles, built on the edge of a meander that has been dry for 6,000 years.
The best view of the cirque de Navacelles is from the top of the Causse de Blandas. From Ganges, follow the Vis to the beautiful village of Madières, then take the road on the right which climbs the mountainside towards Montardier. Once on the causse, follow signs for Blandas. (Signs point the way to the cirque de Navacelles orientation table).
This breathtaking site also invites you to go hiking (Rando Navacelles), with 4 routes at different levels.
