Béziers

The town of Béziers

Situated 60km just beyond Pézenas on a rocky spur perched above the Orb River, Béziers dominates the wine-growing plain of the Hérault.

Béziers sits on a hill 20km from the Mediterranean Sea and 50km from the mountains of the southern foothills of the Massif Central, such as Caroux (1002 meters above sea level) and Espinouse. At the foot of the town flows the Orb, a small river that has carved out an upstream valley not to be missed.

Excavations have uncovered remains dating the town's beginnings to the 6th century BC. In the course of its eventful history, the town has been enriched by churches, castles and traditions.

One of these traditions has become famous: the féria. Night and day, around August 15, the Béziers féria turns heads. Corridas, horse shows and balls set the city and its crowds alight.
The historic center and its narrow streets are home to masterpieces not to be missed. The cathedral of Saint Nazaire is a jewel of Flamboyant Gothic art, with its cloister and gardens.

The Canal du Midi, linking the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean, was designed by Pierre Paul Ricquet (1604-1680), who was born and lived in Béziers.

Just a stone's throw from the town, the series of 9 Fontsérannes locks allows the canal to bypass the gradient. The view over the city is magnificent.

In homage to the creator of the Canal du Midi, the Allées Paul Riquet are the ideal artery for leisure, festivities and commerce.
