Mourèze Circus

The village of Mourèze and its cirque

Just a stone's throw from the red shores of Lac du Salagou, another astonishing landscape surrounds the village of Mourèze. For 8km, gigantic limestone columns (dolomites) reach for the sky in a gigantic 340-hectare amphitheatre.
Some of these petrified columns take on strange shapes, evoking a human skull or the silhouette of a bird of prey.

This forest of stones (the largest in France!) is the result of erosion.
Water dissolves the softer rocks and releases the harder elements.
Between Clermont l'Hérault, Bédarieux and Lodève lies a geologically rich region. From the Primary to the Quaternary eras, hundreds of rocks of all origins trace the great upheavals that have marked the history of our planet. The cirque de Mourèze is just one example.

This exceptional site also invites you to go hiking (Rando Mourèze), with different levels of difficulty ranging from 45min to 3h30.
